1. What experience have you had reviewing and/or approving large organizational budgets?
I served as a member of the Jefferson Parish School Board for eight years. During my tenure on the school board, I served as finance chairman for two years, and a member of the finance committee for four years. Also, I served as President of the Board in 1996 and Vice-President in 1995. I am very familiar with the inner workings of the school system especially in the area of the budgeting.
In addition, I served as Chief Administrative Officer for the City of Kenner from January 2004 to June 30, 2006. During that time, I handled the day to day operations of the City of Kenner and handle composing and implementing the budget for the city.
2. How have you shown your support of public education in Jefferson Parish in the past? My eight years serving on the Jefferson Parish School Board and my three children were educated in the public school system. I served as a parent volunteer at the schools where my three children attended. My oldest son attended the public school system from the first to the eight grades, afterwards he attended and graduated from Jesuit High School. My oldest son attends Harvard Law School, after graduating from Stanford University with two degrees in Japanese and Bio-mechanical Engineering. My twin sons graduated from Grace King High School and attend Louisiana State University.
3. Would you consider expanding the charter school system in Jefferson Parish? What measures would you consider viable to equalize facilities and quality of instruction throughout the Jefferson Parish School System?
Yes, I would consider expanding the charter school system where schools have failed. Parents or the community should have a choice where schools have failed. Make sure facility management is done on a system wide basis. The school system should implement an incentive program for veteran or master teachers to work at low achieving schools. Bonuses should be given to teachers where test scores have risen at failing schools.
4. What concrete, measurable goals will you propose to your fellow board members for the coming school year?
a. The Board should work towards implementing a system wide facility management based on needs of each school and not based on school board districts;
b. Set policies that enhance education as recommended by the Superintendent;
c. Avoid micromanagement of the school system; and
d. Enforcement of the school board code of ethics as adopted by the Louisiana School Board Association.
